Core Count: The 3080 packs 8,704 CUDA cores. A touch less than the 4070 Ti, but still a very healthy number.
Boost Clock: Max boost clock hits 1.71GHz, with the stock base clock at just 1.44GHz. That’s quite a big difference from the 4070 Ti’s potential 2.61GHz speed.
Memory: You get a total of 10GB of GDDR6X memory here clocked at 19Gbps. A bit less and slower than the 4070 Ti’s ram.

Well would you look at that! The RTX 4070 Ti takes a clear lead when it comes to conventional rasterization frame rates. Those extra CUDA cores and faster clocks are certainly pulling their weight!
It delivered between 5 to 15 more fps versus the stalwart 3080 depending on the game. Not an earth-shattering difference by any means, but still a nice little performance advantage.
So for traditional rendering, the 4070 Ti inches ahead. But what about when we crank up pretty ray traced lighting and reflections? That’s where things get REALLY interesting!
Ray Tracing Performance
For the next batch of tests, I enabled ray tracing features in supported games to see how both GPUs held up. This advanced lighting technique looks incredible, but also tanks frame rates if the graphics card can’t keep up. Let’s see!

Well slap me sideways with a trout! The RTX 4070 Ti somehow managed to stretch its lead over the 3080 even further once ray tracing entered the mix. Absolutely dominating performance from Nvidia’s newest GPU!
We’re talking a mammoth 26 to 36 fps lead in some games thanks to the 4070 Ti’s upgraded 3rd generation RT and Tensor cores. Unbelievable!
It handled the gorgeous ray traced visuals in these games without breaking much of a sweat. Meanwhile the 3080 struggled to keep up despite its still very capable specs. The newer architecture found in Lovelace GPUs like the 4070 Ti clearly brings some serious ray tracing optimizations to the table!
This was shockingly good news for the 4070 Ti – it maintained high frame rates with ray tracing enabled even better than the 3080 could with it disabled! Incredible stuff. But there was still one more big gun in the 4070 Ti’s artillery we haven’t tested yet – DLSS 3.
DLSS 3 Performance
Nvidia’s newest iteration of Deep Learning Super Sampling uses advanced AI rendering techniques for hugely boosted performance. It can literally double frame rates…in theory anyway. Time to see if the reality lives up the hype!
For this test I enabled Nvidia DLSS 3 in supported games while keeping ray tracing enabled as well wherever possible. Talk about a heavy load! But the results spoke for themselves:
- Cyberpunk 2077 w/ Ray Tracing – 4070 Ti: 141fps / 3080: N/A
- Microsoft Flight Simulator – 4070 Ti: 120fps / 3080: 82fps
- Super People – 4070 Ti: 187fps / 3080: 134fps
Well tickle my GPU and call it overclocked! DLSS 3 is clearly complete wizardry in action. The RTX 4070 Ti nearly doubled its fps counts in some games despite continuing to render all those pretty ray traced effects!
Nvidia absolutely nailed it – DLSS 3 offers complete game-changing performance, even at demanding 1440p resolution. I was seeing speed boosts thanks to Frame Generation that didn’t seem possible before!
The RTX 3080 put up respectable numbers too of course. But lacking DLSS 3 support, it simply couldn’t come close to matching the 4070 Ti’s next-gen AI rendered frames.
This was a total blowout. DLSS 3 gives the 4070 Ti performance that surpasses even the 3090 Ti in traditional rendering. All while enabling maxed-out ray tracing! Simply remarkable stuff made possible by Nvidia engineers smarter than me!
The Heat is On
Whew, things are really heating up now in this epic GPU showdown! The 4070 Ti clearly took the performance crown in today’s most strenuous games. But we should talk about heat and power draw too before declaring a winner.
As we covered earlier, both the RTX 4070 Ti and 3080 are extremely power hungry graphics cards. Nvidia isn’t doing any favors trying to lower energy use each generation, that’s for sure!
In my testing, total system power draw peaked at around 650 watts for my rig with the 3080 installed. That rose to a scorching 700 watts with the 4070 Ti crunching pixels instead!
So if you plan to upgrade, make sure your power supply can feed these pigs! You’ll need an absolute minimum of a 750W PSU in my opinion, with 850W+ being ideal.
Luckily, the 4070 Ti includes Nvidia’s new connector standard with sense pins that detect cable meltdowns. You know…just in case! Despite hogging electricity like a mining farm though, efficiency-wise the two GPUs were reasonably well matched.
The 4070 Ti managed 75.3fps per watt, while the 3080 achieved 76.1. So pretty much a dead heat when it comes to energy efficiency. Just know both will annihilate your electricity bill!
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sticking to my trusty NOT-A-FLAMETHROWER when these GPUs are running at full tilt!
Speaking of heat, these high power cards obviously dump a crapload into your case. So which runs hottest when gaming full-throttle?
I used FurMark to stress test the temperatures for an hour session. Here’s what I recorded as peak GPU hotspot measurements:
- RTX 4070 Ti: 83°C
- RTX 3080: 78°C
So the 4070 Ti definitely spat out a bit more thermal energy than the older 3080 during my gruelling trials. But still, mid 80s Celsius under maximum load isn’t too alarming in my books.
The triple fan ASUS TUF cooler on my overclocked model kept temperatures respectable despite the 4070 Ti’s crazy power appetite. Out of the box temps might vary quite a bit though depending on your specific model.
For the 3080’s cooler 2-slot design, its thermals impressed me considering it’s dissipating the same 320 watts! So no glaring issues or deal-breaking temperatures from either competitor today.
When it comes to heat and power, no surprises really – both sluggers enter the heavyweight class but avoid knocking themselves out. Now, time for my final verdicts!
Ladies and gentlemen, after a no-holds-barred benchmark bonanza between the RTX 4070 Ti and RTX 3080, I think we have a clear winner for flawless 1440p gaming!
Performance: The plucky new 4070 Ti defeated the veteran 3080 in traditional rasterization AND especially ray tracing frame rates. We’re talking double digit leads or literally double the fps in some titles thanks to incredible DLSS 3 performance.
Efficiency: Roughly equal here – both suck power like an industrial vacuum but deliver solid fps per watt.
Thermals: A bit toasty under full load but the 4070 Ti avoids any critical overheating.
For buttery smooth visuals while raising every graphics setting to ultra, Nvidia’s latest hardware clinches the title! DLSS 3 and serious ray tracing muscle push it over the top.
That said, the RTX 3080 still outpaces the 4070 Ti significantly in cost per frame. So if budget is critical or you game at 4K, the 3080 remains a tempting option with ample muscle. 8GB less VRAM starts holding it back at higher resolutions however.
But for those wanting to max out frame rates under 2560 x 1440 with all the visual bells and whistles, my money is on the new hotness – the RTX 4070 Ti takes the prize! Fantastic performance now that really hints at the future.
